Hoar Cross / Holly Prince Trust 10K - June 2010

E-mail Print PDF

What a super local race. Yvonne Nicholls, Neil Caswell & myself did this around the picturesque village of Hoar Cross.

The organiser of the race Lesley Prince, along with her husband, set up a charity called "The Holly Prince Trust", in memory of their daughter Holly who unfortunately died aged just six months old from an illness called Classic Zellweger. Syndrome. They are raising money to help research & raise awareness of this illness. All of the proceeds from the 10k run & Farmer's Market were going to this charity.

This brings everything into perspective, as to what may happen. I am lucky to have two healthy daughters.

This is a new race in its second year. Found out about it via Bryan Dales' race photos website - www.racephotos.org.uk

Race took place on a Saturday. Turned up just after 9am to register. It gave out good vibes from the start. Registration took place in a horse box in a farmer's field, next door to a lovely country pub. A very lovely country feeling.

Race entry was only £10. This included chip timing, a T-shirt & a medal. Very good value for money. Some bigger events should take note from this event on organisation & costs, as everything went like clockwork. I'd actually put this down as one of the best local races I've ever done.

Race started at 10am. It reminded us of running through the lanes around Chorley & Cannock Wood. Around 140 people entered the 10k. The course was undulating. I wouldn't class it as a PB route. We ran round the lanes through the villages of Hoar Cross & Newborough, passing the entrance of Hoar Cross Hall.

The finish was in a field. Neil did 45 mins, Yvonne did 49 mins & I did 52 mins. Yvonne got a prize - 1st female in her age category. She got a nice hoody & handmade willow sunflower.

We then went to the Farmer's market at the adjoining pub. Had a lovely bacon roll & cup of coffee. There was a sandpit for the kids, donkey rides, various country stalls (including nice homemade cakestall). Weather was superb.

I would thoroughly recommend you to do this race next year. We all enjoyed it. It makes you realise what running is about. I'll never be fast. Running should not just be about getting fast times. You should always enjoy the running. It was just a great morning.
